Before we delve into the Girl Guides, a little on the Scouts.Robert Baden-Powell was a Lieutenant-General in the British Army and saw action in the 2nd Boer War (1899 – 1902) and founded the Scout movement. His inspiration came at the bloody Siege of Mafeking (the breaking of the siege by the British being especially bloody for the Boers) where he observed how young boys could be extraordinarily good messengers, freeing the men to engage in combat. Baden-Powell took a group of boys camping to Brownsea Island in 1907 and so encouraged by the success wrote Scouting for Boys and the Scout Movement was born.
