Greenheart intentionally uploaded a cracked version of its game to torrent sites, but modified a bit of the code. As a form of, the version intentionally cracked by Greenheart includes piracy as one of the game mechanics. So, instead of developing a game and making money based on its quality and level of marketing, players will have to deal with their in-game video game being the target of in-game. A trip to the game’s official forums will show a number of users posting threads complaining about the piracy mechanic in the game, not realizing that they’re outing themselves as someone who downloaded the cracked version rather than purchased the game.
Perhaps more amusingly, the people that did download that cracked version didn’t technically pirate the game, as the studio intentionally uploaded it for people to download for free.Sadly, Greenheart games said that only a little over 6% of people playing Game Dev Tycoon bought the game legitimately. Greenheart is offering a demo of the game, so you also wouldn’t “need” to pirate it to see if you like it enough to purchase it. The game, and has a version for Windows, OS X, and Linux.
