Install Octave Windows Cygwin
I've followed the instructions on(Technique 1)to install Octave on Windows XP using Cygwin. Still, it is not quiteclear to me what is the proper way to set up the graphical output.If I fire up my cygwin environment, then i get a bash shell. Withinthat bash shell, i start up Octave, and apparently, it is version 2.1.49that is included in my freshly installed Cygwin distribution.If i want to plot something, of course i don't get any output and myOctave complains about pgnuplot not being found.I.do. have gnuplot version 3.8j in my cygwin installation, and I also haveX. But what is the proper way to set up things so i have graphical output onWindows XP?

I think the problem is that in the time that has passed since I created the Cygwin packages for Octave and gnuplot, a new package for gnuplot appeared in the official set of Cygwin packages. That version is a native Cygwin build, which can't open plot windows directly in Windows. If you want to do that (and I think it is better than running X just to get plotting to work) then you can do the following:. Download a binary of gnuplot for Windows from the gnuplot area on sourceforge.
Click on the download button next to the 4.0.0 version of gnuplot. Then download the file gp400win32.zip. Unzip the gp400win32.zip file. Copy the files pgnuplot.exe wgnuplot.exe wgnuplot.hlp wgnuplot.mnu to /usr/local/bin in your Cygwin installation.

If you install some binary package for Windows,it could contain any number of libraries and other programs that workbehind the scenes to make your application go.

Then the next time you plot something, it should start a newgnuplot process in the default mode.jwe-Sadly, everything always works perfectly for me, so in order to findthe problems some outside help is needed. You could try closeplot which should terminate the connectino to the external gnuplot process.

Here goes:a) Install a basic cygwin enviroment using the setup tool.b) Install octave and octave-forge using the setup tool. Beforeproceding I manually remove gnuplot and any X11 and graphic libsdependencies. This has to be done manually selecting the proper listfrom the installer (iirc it was the 'Partial' list).
After the all thepackages are selected as 'Skip' from the list, the installer willcomplain about octave depending on gnuplot. Click on the checkbox at thebottom of the dialog to continue anyway.c) Download the native version of gnuplot from gnuplot.sf.net and copyall the binaries to the /bin of the cygwin dir (I don't the docs).
Install Cygwin On Windows
Copypgnuplot.exe to gnuplot.exe, so octave could find it (this can also bedone from octave config files, but I couldn't remember exactly how).d) Install rxvt from the setup tool.e) Copy startoctave.sh from octave-forge to the cygwin dir. It doesn'tmatter where 'cause it's only referenced by the nsis script, which hasto be modified anyway.
There is a problem with symlinks and the nsisinstall builder (don't know exactly why), so in the script you have tochange octave.exe to octave-2.1.72.exe. Also you need to add the fullsystem (cygwin) path to the PATH variable, so cygwin can locate the dlls.f) Copy an octave icon to the cygwin dir. I used the xcalc icon from theNuvola collection.g) Modify the octave-forge nsis script to make it work with the newdirectory structure (octave is no longer installed at/opt/octave-VERSION and some of the registry entries neededmodifications as well). I'll upload the script (along with all themodified files) as soon as I get home.h) Build the package using nsis with the modified script.If you look at the procedure you'll notice that I didn't remove anythingfrom the cygwin enviroment.
